runningcursive:

a letter from conceptual artist Hanne Darboven to critic and curator Lucy Lippard.the piece doesn’t convey much information in the conventional sense yet it is visually and conceptually complex. it’s of great interest as an intermedia work blurring the boundaries between gestural art, abstract drawing and handwriting.
marks in the letter include wavy lines that are too regular and repetitive to be real words. dashes replace words invoking text but at the same time eliminating meaning, description or narrative.
references to mutual friends. places or plans reclaim the letter for the realm of communication, while quotes from T.S Eliot and philosophical phrases impart on it a certain universality. as a whole the letter is an expression of affection for a friend, as well as an ongoing commitment to daily labour.Hanne Darboven spoke about how the nature of ideas is immaterial and they may thus be represented with the simplest of means, which in this case are lined paper and tricolour pens. her use of material is liberating in that it subverts modernism’s need for precious objects.
